What Chair Arrangement Appeals to You?
Ideas to consider:
- Side chairs are armless, so you can fit more at the table, while armchairs provide extra comfort.

For rectangular tables:
- Use the same side chair all around for a clean and cohesive feel.

Or, try a classic arrangement of armless chairs on the sides and armchairs at the ends.
- Side and arm chairs from the same collection for a harmonious feel

What Are You Looking for in a Dining Chair?
- Fully upholstered dining chairs, with or without arms, are completely covered in fabric or leather to the floor. Armless styles are also called Parsons chairs.
- Other dining chairs have upholstered seats and backs, with wood legs in a choice of 20 finishes.
- Some of our dining chairs have metal frames, like the popular Remy and Gage collections, that let you choose both upholstery material and metal finish. Gage also offers a choice of three back heights to further personalize your look.

- Chairs with welt trim along their edges have a contrast-welt option: Choose a second fabric or leather to outline their shape.
- Some chair styles offer the option of nailhead trim, available in multiple metal finishes.
- Our collection also includes a swivel dining chair and dining chairs on casters for ease of movement at the table.
- Modern leather dining chairs are also available.
- Some collections also include upholstered bar stools and counter stools.
Which Fabric for Your Chairs?
Our library of 400+ fabrics includes many easy-care performance fabrics, recommended for worry-free dining. Performance fabrics come in many styles, from velvets to linens to chenilles in solid colors and patterns. Choosing a simple-to-clean performance fabric gives you great color options—including light or white hues, even with young children.
Color depends on your preference and your room’s décor or design style. Tables can also set the tone:
- A wood table in a light finish with chairs in a soft, muted color gives a relaxed feel to a room.
- A wood table in a dark finish with contrasting white chairs offers a sophisticated aesthetic.
- A modern metal-and-glass Parsons table can be warmed by pattern or vibrant color.
- An elegant marble-top table makes a strong focal point; it can benefit from solid-color chairs.
Because dining rooms can be busy spaces, minimalist décors with soft neutrals and natural materials can be especially appealing, letting your guests and the menu take center stage.

Keep Standard Dining Dimensions in Mind
- Number of chairs you’ll need depends on the width of your table. For example, a 96” rectangle table seats 6 to 8 comfortably. On average, 24” of space per person is recommended.
- To allow space to pull out chairs and move about the room, allow 3 feet between the table and walls or other furniture pieces.
- Standard dining chair seat height is between 18” and 23”, while table height average 30”. Check to be sure chairs feel right for the table when you’re pulled up to it. Also, aim for about 12” between seat and tabletop for comfort.
